The Wine Boutique Franks recently held a blind tasting of 5 Macallan single malts whiskies in its boutique in Sliema. The malts we tried were the Macallan Amber, Siena, Rare cask, 2009 vintage and 1997 vintage. Our tasting was attended by 29 people and we sought to see if the age of the whisky actually effect the perceived taste, in fact out of the 5 whiskies we tried, the most popular where the whiskies which did not have an age statement. These whiskies are interesting because they allow the distiller to create a whisky with much greater flexibility and the master distiller is able to mix a variety of casks to arrive at the final goal. All the whiskies had no caramel added therefore they were bottled with their natural colour adding to the authenticity of the perceived colour.
