For Spring / Summer 2018, Lucia Pica heeds the siren’s call of home to return to the city of her birth anew.

Here, Naples’ ever-changing landscape, layered with history, meaning and metaphor, provides the inspiration for colours, moods and techniques that offer a warm, rich and unexpectedly Mediterranean approach for the house – at once antique and utterly contemporary.

The name Neapolis – or ‘New City’ – reflects Naples’ origins as an ancient Greek colony as well as a city looked at afresh by Pica; free of clichés, the area’s ancient roots and modern incarnation collide in a surprising yet complementary palette of greens, yellows, golds, reds and blacks. Both the natural world – from the volcanic landscape of Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields, to the waters of the Bay – and the man made architectural and artistic legacy – including the pigments of the frescoes in Villa Poppaea in Oplontis, to the decoration of Baroque churches with the occasional priceless Caravaggio painting within – are explored and prove ripe for possibility in the colours and methods of the collection.

 

SPRING / SUMMER 2018 COLLECTION THE COLLECTION

CHANEL Spring Summer 2018 collectionEyes

Central to the collection is the limited edition LES 9 OMBRES eyeshadow palette containing an enticing spectrum of brighter and more muted shades.

For added intensity, Lucia Pica looks to green: OMBRE PREMIÈRE Crème in Verderame is an exceptional dusty grey-green with a subtle metallic sheen, which looks beautiful worn alone or layered beneath the shadows in the eye palette.

STYLO YEUX WATERPROOF is either in Nero Vulcanico a deepest green-blue inspired by the ash black from Vulcano, or in Mare-Chiaro, a bright jade green.

Face

For the face, inspired by the view of the mountains view at sunset, JOUES CONTRASTE blush in Foschia Rosa is a poetic dusting of pink that will instantly enliven the complexion.

Lips

For the lips, something special: POUDRE À LÈVRES, an entirely new and artisanal approach to lip color inspired by traditional tempera techniques used to create the ancient frescoes. In addition to the lip powders, there are no fewer than ten other choices of color for the lips, from the bright poppy and raspberry shades of the ROUGE ALLURE and ROUGE ALLURE VELVET lipsticks to the glisteningly ethereal shades of ROUGE COCO GLOSS, including Parthenope, a nude peachy caramel and Aphrodite, a watery baby blue that can be worn alone or layered over brighter color. The ROUGE ALLURE INK shades, Entusiasta – a matte orange – or Eterea – a perfect peach pink complete the lip line-up.

Nails

Nails offer another chance to play: for Spring / Summer 2018. Lucia Pica offers her first pastel shades, including Nuvola Rosa, a ‘pastel pink cloud’ and Verde Pastello, a delicate mint green, but also a bright orange with Arancio Vibrante. Giallo Napoli – ‘bright Naples yellow’ refers to the affresco picture, the famous color used in paints.

With GABRIELLE CHANEL fragrance, perfumer Olivier Polge, in cooperation with the CHANEL Fragrance Creation and Development Laboratory has given flowers a brand new voice.  He did so by composing a dream flower, an explosive corolla, a whirlwind of petals.  This pure product of the mind has created an ideal white flower, drawing upon all of the floral varieties ever recorded in the history of CHANEL Fragrances.  Olivier Polge began by selecting ylang-ylang, jasmine and orange blossom, as well as a touch of tuberose now grown in Grasse, but then took his conception of white flowers much further.  By varying their range, deciphering their score, he took interest in the molecules that compose them.  He increased the intensity of jasmine.  He used white musk notes to add more velvet to the ylang-ylang petals.  He accentuated the creaminess of tuberose with milky sandalwood.  He boosted the freshness of orange blossom with mandarin peel, a zest of grapefruit and a hint of blackcurrant.  The imaginary flower does more than produce an olfactory vibration of the skin.  It diffuses its luminous power like a floral halo.

And it is those emotional extremes that Lucia Pica, Global Creative Designer for Makeup and Colour at CHANEL, seeks to evoke in her debut collection for CHANEL Beauty.

For Fall 2016, LE ROUGE · COLLECTION N°1 explores the abstract and expressive resonances of the colour red while reconfiguring its role in beauty. At times, Lucia Pica seeks to transform the traditional role of red, at once celebrating and subverting its classic status as the preeminent colour for lipstick, blush and nail varnish. While still partaking in the search for the iconic and classic in each area of the collection, Pica also confounds expectations and takes the red into unexpected realms, particularly that of eye makeup, evoking emotion and passion here too.

It is no surprise that red is one of the power colours of CHANEL Fashion and a foundation colour of CHANEL Beauty. Introduced in 1924, CHANEL’s red lipstick, both a signature of Coco Chanel’s personal style and an icon of the beauty house, has never been out of fashion or out of production. Through its many incarnations, it has been used from the beginning for both its attractive and combative qualities, with Coco Chanel saying “mettez du rouge et attaquez*”. It was a fascination with this iconic red, and her own personal obsession with the colour in general —red is often a signature in her editorial work— that led Lucia Pica to explore the colour further. Here, in LE ROUGE · COLLECTION N°1, Pica’s concept of feminine power, passion and emotional preparedness for everyday life, is expressed through the multiplicity of reds to be found throughout.
