Ron Cristobal is offers our clients a selection of entry level spirits ideal for mixers and cocktails such as the Blanco & Oro, along with finer and older rums such as the Nina and the Santa Maria aged in Olorosso sherry casks.

Franks launches a new wines from New Zealand

A good wine is like perfume in a bottle and it is […]

A good wine is like perfume in a bottle and it is this mantra that helps guide us when we search the world over for rare wines to stock in our shops. Today New Zealand is a premier vine growing region despite it being a relative newcomer to the world of wine. This region boasts a variety of climates that helps craft wines of great elegance and structure, with international grape varieties such as pinot noir, syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and of course sauvignon blanc.

What most people don’t understand is how big the islands actually are, to put things into perspective they length is roughly equivalent to the distance of Morocco to Pairs. You can only imagine the huge geographical differences that can take place, also adding the cool maritime climate and the fact that it is closer to Antarctica than Australia.

A history of the Islands wine heritage

Samuel Marsden, an Anglican missionary, made the first recorded planting of grapevines at the Bay of Islands in 1819.  The earliest recorded winemaker was Scotsman James Busby, appointed the first British Resident in New Zealand.  When the French explorer, Dumont d’Urville, visited Busby at Waitangi in 1840, he was given “a light white wine, very sparkling and delicious to taste…”

French priests and peasants, Hawke’s Bay pastoralists, Croatian gum-diggers and others  preserved the flame ignited by Busby throughout the 19th century.  But the assaults of oidium (powdery mildew), the vine-destroying phylloxera aphid, and prohibitionist zealots together ensured that the early dreams of a flourishing antipodean industry faded.

The 1920s and ‘30s witnessed gradual but unspectacular growth.  The industry boomed during the Second World War – when duties were raised on imported wines – and expansion continued. During the 1950s and ‘60s, due to a string of legislative concessions by successive governments, including major reductions in the minimum amounts of wine that could be sold by winemakers, approval for more retail outlets, and the licensing of restaurants to sell wine in 1960.

An outstanding feature of the 1960s and 1970s was heavy investment by overseas companies, Australian and American.  The 1970s also brought an overall improvement in wine quality and heavy emphasis on the production of light, fruity, slightly sweet whites, based on the heavy-cropping variety, muller-thurgau.

In recent decades, most Kiwi drinkers have developed a taste for fully dry styles, made from such classic varieties as sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot gris and pinot noir, which now dominate the industry’s output.  Wine has played a key role in the emergence of the country’s thriving café culture.

New Zealand wineries originally set out to serve the small domestic market, operating within a highly regulated economy.  But in 1985 the government moved to speed up the removal of barriers against overseas bottles, allowing Australian producers to contest the New Zealand market on an equal footing by 1990.

Spurred into action by their heavy loss of domestic market share, the winemakers launched a sustained export drive.  The value of New Zealand’s exports has skyrocketed from $NZ18 million in 1990, to a forecasted rise to $2 billion by 2020.

New wine companies are mushrooming, from Northland to Central Otago.  Thirty years ago, there were fewer than 100 New Zealand wineries; today the ranks have swollen to over 670.  The industry is forever abuzz with the excitement of new companies, new faces, new labels.

New Champagne in Stock! Pommery & Lallier.

Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials is the leading wine & spirits shop in Sliema […]

Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials is the leading wine & spirits shop in Sliema and we are proud to stock a new selection of fine champagnes produced by Pommery & Lallier. These sparkling wines are all made in the traditional method and are renowned for their fine bubbles and great taste. Champagne Pommery was founded in 1858 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and is one of the great houses of Champagne.

Masion Lallier was established in 1906 and is today considered as being one of the boutique Champagne houses. Its grapes are sourced from Ay one the 7 grand cru of the region.

A brief history about Champagne.

Champagne, like other major wine regions of France, has seen the cultivation of grapes for wine for at least 2,000 years, since the time of the Romans. Indeed, it was the Romans who named the area “Campania” for its resemblance to the rolling hillsides of Southern Italy’s Campania region.

Of course in Europe there are a variety of sparikiling wines and methods of production, however the most famous of these methods is the classic or traditional method, which was referred to as the méthode champenoise.  EU laws forbade its use as of 1990 so that no other European wine region could incorporate any term that included champagne.

The classic method provides the greatest complexity and generates the most expensive results, especially if it originates in France. This method reflects many different styles but is generally based on a classic combination of Chardonnay, which provides the elegance and acid backbone to the wine; Pinot Noir, which provides structure and power; and Pinot Meunier, which provides fruitiness. The latter is not found in many of the most expensive and aged wines as it is said to depreciate with time in the bottle.

The hottest trend in sparkling wines is Rosé, which requires either that the juice comes in contact with skins or, in Champagne, that red wine is blended into the white wine to provide the color. No other EU appellation is allowed to make a Rosé using such a method.

The next critical element of many sparkling wines is the dosage or sweetening level added to the finished wine. The Champagne region of France is 70 miles northeast of Paris and is in a zone that traditionally had difficulty in producing ripe grapes. While the grapes certainly have flavor ripeness, they produce wines low in alcohol and high in acid. Over the centuries, the traditional method evolved a defined system of greater levels of sweetness suited to different consumers.

New Bluecoat GIN in stock at Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials , Sliema

Looking for a classic gin with an American twist? Pop by our shop and try our new line up of American gins named Blue coat gins.

The Inspiration of Bluecoat

The Bluecoat brand was created in Boston and it is inspired by the revolutionary wars of independence when the American revolutionaries were literally dressed in Blue coats.

These fine spirits are available in 3 different flavours, the classic, the bluecoat barrel aged and the Bluecoat Elderflower .

When we first received our samples the team at Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials was over the moon to open and taste these highly rated gins. We immediately opened the bottles and tried the Blue coat classic.

The Tasting

Notes of the Bluecoat classic .

A taste of juniper is evident with notes of citrus, an ideal spirit to enjoy in our hot summer months.

Notes of the Bluecoat Elderflower.

Rose petals and elderflower kick off the fragrant nose, with plenty of lemon peel and pith. The palate remains floral, with more of that rose-elderflower tandem, while also showcasing an herbaceous side backed by spicy peppermint. A floral finish showcases orange peel and pink peppercorns.

Notes of the Bluecoat Barrel aged

Being aged for at least 3 months in a barrel this gives the original gin a creamy flavour with hints of vanilla and juniper.

Since Franks is the leading gin shop in Malta, with a variety of over 70 brands, bluecoat is a welcome addition to our vast selection. So pop by our shop in Level 2, The Plaza shopping centre, Sliema, Malta and try them out, or buy them online from our website. Free delivery applies for purchases over 50 euro all over Malta & Gozo.

New Irish Whisky is now in stock in Franks Sliema

Franks is the leading wine, whisky & cigar shop in Malta and […]

Franks is the leading wine, whisky & cigar shop in Malta and we are proud to stock Waterford Irish whiskies. Waterford is a whisky brand like no other, it is born out of the vision of Mark Reynier whose obsession with Terroir has driven him and his brand to exiting new heights in the world of single malts.

What makes Waterford Whisky so special?

The idea behind Waterford whisky is simple, it is to create the worlds best whisky by applying the philosophy of the wine world to single malts. However what does it mean?

Simply put the best wines in the world are not made from generic grapes grown around the world , fermented and then bottled. There is an idea of “terroir”, which means that the grapes act like a camera , but instead of capturing light, they capture the flavour of the area they are grown in. Of course each parcel of land is effected in different ways.

An area of high altitude will produce a fresher crop than a parcel of land in lower altitudes. This of course creates a difference in acidity between the 2 and so it effects the final aromas. Soil is a other factor that has major consequences on flavour and last but not least we are all testament to the simple fact that each year that passes is different to the one before.

This is were Mark started off, his question was simple. If terroir effect grapes, why are we assuming that it doesn’t effect barley? Isn’t it a crop that is receptive to the same notions of soil, light and time?

The story behind the whisky and the brand.

With this simple question Mark set off on a quest to find the perfect site for his new distillery. His previous job as the managing director of Bruichladdich thought him that the worlds best barley was grown in Ireland and so the emerald isle it was.

He and his team found a newly built but abandoned beer factory in Waterford and after some time he managed to buy it. Of course it was only logical to name his brand based on the concept of terroir after the town it was located in.

Once the deal was sealed he set about looking for the best parcels of land all around the country , contacted and explained each concept to the farmers and set off to work.

The Process.

Once the barley is grown each farmer delivers his crop to the main site where each plot is individually stored, this is called the cathedral. Storing each plot separate is of the utmost importance in ensuring traceability . speaking about honesty and traceability the detail the madmen at Waterford have gone through is nothing short of miraculous.

Every bottle of Waterford has a unique code at the back and once you enter this code on there site you are given a full breakdown of the entire history. What we are speaking of is the geographical location, the type of soil, the weather patterns during harvest, one can even listen to the sound of the field!

After having malted and distilled each plot to the highest standard they are placed in identical barrels ( a mixture of French and American oak). After a period of aging each whisky is then bottled at 50% and placed in the iconic glass blue bottles.

Where to find these mouthwatering whiskies?

We are currently stocking a variety of 5 different bottles which are the Sheestown 1.2, Ballymorgan 1.2, Gaia organic 1.1, Lakefield 1.1 and the Hook head 1.1.

Visit our shop in Franks, level 2 the plaza shopping centre, Sliema and ask to try a free sample or buy online via our website. Free delivery applies for purchases over 50 euro all over Malta & Gozo.

Rum Malta

A simple search of buy rum Malta on google will send you to our online shop and of course there is a reason! This month, Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials launched a premium brand of Rum named Ron Esclavo. Ron Escalvo is a boutique brand distilled in the Dominican Republic and found in exclusive boutiques in Malta.

About Ron Esclavo and it’s fantastic Rums

During the 16th to 19th century the slave trade was a flourishing business that made a lot European entrepreneurs very wealthy. It had all started when European traders would sell weapons to 1 African king to use against his enemy and sell off his conquered people. Eventually the Europeans ended up conquering most of Africa and shipping hundreds of thousand to plantations across the other side of the ocean.

The Caribbean provide to be fertile ground for sugar to grow on, of course with cheap labour it soon became the leading producer of sugar cane in the world.

The Rum brands name pays homage to the slaves that were imported from Africa to work on these plantations to grow sugar cane that would supply the West is ever growing sweet tooth. Within the Ron Esclavo series you’ll discover a rum for every occasion. Whether you’re looking for a pleasant drink for beginners or cask strength for the experienced rum connoisseur, you’ll find it here.

Our experience of these Rums.

When we received these fine spirits in Malta the Franks GE team set out to try them as objectively as possible, after all choosing the right product for our shop is not a issue we take lightly.

We started off with the Gran reserva which had a sweet aroma of brown sugar and fruit. After that we progressed onto the 12 year old versions, these evidently were in a different league. What left a lasting impression is the 12 year old rum aged in Islay whisky barrels. This was a unique rum as it had the sweetness of the distillate with notes of smoke and iodine.

The last beauty we tried was the XO and what a beauty she was. Complex, fruity with a long length, no wonder people go mad when they try them.

A history of rum and the navy.

During the 18th century travelling from one country to next next would take a while, let alone crossing an entire ocean. In fact when sailors would cross the Atlantic they would spend months on end waiting till they arrive on shore. Of course this would lead to a sickness called Scurvy which is when the body doesn’t get enough vitamin c.

It turns out that rums are ideal as they contain a lot of sugar that helps prevent the loss of your teeth and so most sailor were given portions of this sea fairing drink to help alleviate the possible effects.

The decor of the box and labels.

When speaking to one of the directors of these rum we found out that the idea behind the label was for it to appear more appealing to women , in fact its clean design and floral labels are a definite eye catcher. So remember, if you are looking for the perfect gift for this summer a Ron Esclavo rum will not be wasted.

Where to find these Rums?

Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials is proud to add this boutique producer to its ever growing list of fine wines & spirits. Pop by our shop in level 2 , the Plaza shopping centre, Sliema, Malta to try them before you buy or purchase them via our online shop. New Kilchoman limited Single Malt Whisky launched!

Franks Launches new Single Malt to add to its collection

Kilchoman, Islay’s smallest and only family owned single malt whisky distillery has just launched a new limited edition Single malt. This years limited release whisky is aged in the finest Pedro Ximenez casks, giving it a very complex aroma of flavours.

Of course being a whisky from Islay, smoky peat is part of its DNA, and this further complimented by the sweet influence of the barrel it is aged in.

A word from Anthony Wills- founder of Kilchoman distillery.

“Pedro Ximénez casks aren’t always the easiest to work with. That was why we decided on a combination of full maturation and finishing, to balance the distinct PX influence with that of our spirit. I’m delighted with the result; big and bold but with a delightful poise and balance of flavour,”

What makes this Whisky so special?

Perhaps it is the limited amount of stock we received, or its simply the great taste it has to offer. PX aged whiskies are beautiful as they create a tug of war within your palate. On one hand they create a dance of sweet dried fruit reminiscent of mince pies and other hand they pull in the other direction with there intense smoky aroma.

By its very nature of being a boutique distillery, Kilchoman single malt whisky is naturally placed to focus on quality as opposed to quantity.

About the Distillery and the Single Malt Whisky.

Founded in 2005 kilchoman was the first distillery to set up shop in Islay for over a 100 years. Life wast easy in the beginning, but as they say where there is a Will they is a way. Anthony Wills (no pun intended), his wife and his family of 3 boys set to work in creating the Single Malt Whisky that would rule them all.

Since then they have launched a number of expressions in a variety of barrels ranging from bourbon barrels to Sauternes casks. In our opinion there most interesting Single Malt Whisky is what they call there 100% Islay.

The 100% Islay is a range of whiskies whose barley is all grown locally giving the whisky a sense of terroir, which is very rare in a world dominated by large multinational corporations who source barley depending on the price as opposed to the provenance.

A single malt whisky with a local touch…

Perhaps what was most memorable for us at Franks was when our own Andrew Abela, (5th generation director of Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials) actually spent a week working in the distillery and came up with the idea of creating a single malt whisky aged in a local wine barrel.

This went on to win “worlds best single malt whisky” in its category by Jim Murray’s whisky bible as well as being sent all around the world from America to Singapore.

Today Franks is proud to stock a large selection of these fine drams , ranging from the entry level whiskies such as the Machir bay to the rarest single malts the brand has to offer.

So remember if you are looking to buy an exclusive whisky in Malta you can pop by our shop in Franks Gentlemen’s Essentials, Level 2, the Plaza shopping centre, Sliema or buy it online via our website. Remember if you spend 50 euro your delivery is free.

Kilchoman is a renowned single malt scotch known for its moderate smoky taste and innovative approach to whisky production. Since Franks is the islands leading wine, spirits and cigar shop we are proud to stock such an important brand.

The relatively small size of their operation ensures that they pay the utmost attention to each and every cask within their warehouses. This specific bottle has notes of raisins, pudding complemented with a touch of peat smoke and a final layer of citrus. Being extremely rare we only managed to source 12 bottles for all of Malta & Gozo so buy them whilst the last!

How to learn of new single malt whisky launches in Malta & Gozo…

Like us on facebook to keep in touch with all our new launches as we have a lot more coming our way in the coming months ranging from mouthwatering Japanese single malts to some fine Irish whiskeys.
